The selection of the glass used in pharmaceutical vial manufacturing are important initial considerations that help facilitate the long term stability of drug storage.
CLASSIFICATION OF GLASS QUALITY
The quality of glass used in glass vial manufacturing is outlined in USP, and is ranked from Type 1 to Type IV, with Type 1 glass being the highest quality. Specifically, USP Type 1 glass is referred to as "borosilicate glass" or "neutral glass", and is the best choice for pharmaceutical applications. There are more than one glass manufacturer that offers Type 1 neutral glass, including Schott, Corning, and NEG (Nippon Electric Glass), and are utilized by world recognized pharmaceutical glass vial manufacturers, such as Gerresheimer AG.
