Peptide Vial Packaging for the 6 PCAC-Recommended Peptides

Article: Peptide Vial Packaging for the 6 Peptides the FDA Advisory Committee Recommended

On July 23–24, 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee (PCAC) voted to recommend six peptides for the 503A bulks list: BPC-157, KPV, TB-500, MOTS-c, Semax and Epitalon (NCPA). Compounding pharmacies, peptide manufacturers and research labs are now planning for the possibility of higher, more regulated demand.
Whatever the final ruling, one requirement does not change. A lyophilized peptide is only as stable as the vial, stopper and seal that hold it. This article covers the packaging components each of these six peptides needs, and the standards behind them.
Where these peptides stand with the FDA
The PCAC vote is a recommendation, not an approval. The committee advises FDA, and its votes are not binding (NCPA). A seventh peptide, emideltide (DSIP), was not recommended (Holland & Knight).
Before a 503A pharmacy can compound any of the six, FDA must add it to the 503A bulks list through notice-and-comment rulemaking. Until then, these peptides still cannot be lawfully compounded (Holland & Knight). Check the FDA page for the current status before you compound.

The Six Peptides at a Glance
All six are commonly supplied as lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder in small multi-milligram fills, which is why the ISO 2R vial is the standard container for them.

Why lyophilized peptides need the right container closure system
Freeze-drying removes water to keep a peptide stable, so the package must keep water, oxygen and microbes out. FDA's container closure guidance asks packagers to show protection, compatibility, safety and performance. It names water vapor, reactive gases such as oxygen, light and microbial contamination as the main threats (FDA, 1999).
The standards that govern each component:
Vial: ISO 8362-1 sets the dimensions of tubing-glass injection vials, including the 2R size (DIN EN ISO 8362-1). USP <660> covers glass containers.
Stopper: USP <381> sets baseline biological, physicochemical and functional requirements for elastomeric closures (PDA). ISO 8362-5 covers freeze-drying closures (EVS).
Seal: ISO 8362-6 covers caps made of aluminium-plastic combinations, the flip-off style (EVS).
Whole system: USP <382>, official since December 2025, sets functional suitability for the complete vial-stopper-seal system, including needle self-sealing (PDA). USP <1207> guides container closure integrity testing.
Lyophilized vials are especially demanding. Breaches can come from improperly seated stoppers, poorly applied caps, fibers on the vial lip or glass cracks (Pharmaceutical Technology). Matched components from one supplier reduce those fit problems.

ISO 2R Peptide Vials
Our ISO 2R vials come in clear and amber glass, sterile and non-sterile. Choose amber when your peptide or diluent is light-sensitive; FDA notes that light protection is typically provided by an amber or opaque container (FDA, 1999). Sterile clear and sterile amber ISO 2R vials ship in convenient 100-piece nested trays, open and ready to fill with the lyophilized peptide of your choice. If you can sterile your own ISO 2R vials, more economically priced ISO 2R vials are also available: ISO 2R Vials Non-Sterile and shrink wrapped in plastic trays

QCVIALZ 13mm Peptide Vial Stoppers
Open sterile 2R vials take 13mm stoppers. QCVIALZ offers pre-washed, bioburden and endotoxin tested 13mm lyophilization stoppers in two different styles:
- 2-leg lyophilization stopper, which sits partly seated during freeze-drying so vapor can escape, then is pushed down to seal.
- Igloo-style lyophilization stopper, with a side vent that serves the same purpose.
Both come in bulk, ready-to-autoclave bags for both small-scale and high-volume manufacturing.
13mm Peptide Vial Seals
ISO 2R vials take 13mm flip cap seals, in two formats:
- Embossed with the internationally recognized FLIP OFF® seals - a West Pharmaceutical trademark
- Non-EMbossed without words embossed in the plastic - available in both matte finish and gloss finish.
We stock several colors in non-embossed matte finish, plus the famous embossed FLIP-OFF® seals from West Pharmaceutical Services. Color-coding seals by peptide helps prevent mix-ups on the bench. When you want the best, CHOOSE WEST!

Peptide Vial Boxes
QCVIALZ offers small peptide vial boxes sized for the ISO 2R vial, in cardboard and plastic. Both come in single-vial and multi-vial formats; see the QCVIALZ Peptide Packer for multi-vial packs.

Frequently Asked Peptide Vial Packaging
Has the FDA approved BPC-157 and the other five peptides for compounding? No. In July 2026 the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee recommended them for the 503A bulks list. FDA must still complete rulemaking before pharmacies can lawfully compound them.
What size vial is used for lyophilized peptides? The ISO 2R vial is the most common choice for small lyophilized peptide fills. It uses a 13mm stopper and a 13mm seal.
What is the difference between a 2-leg and an igloo lyophilization stopper? Both sit partly seated during freeze-drying so water vapor can escape, then are pressed down to seal. The 2-leg style vents between two legs; the igloo style vents through a side opening.
Should I use clear or amber peptide vials? Use amber when the peptide or diluent is light-sensitive. Clear glass makes visual inspection of the cake easier.
What is a 13mm flip-off seal? A two-piece seal: an aluminum crimp ring with a plastic cap. Flipping off the cap exposes the stopper for needle access.
Does QCVIALZ ship outside the US? Yes. QCVIALZ ships worldwide and can help with customs clearance and advance import-tax payment on request.
